Since , I’ve been to over gay bars as I crisscrossed the country interviewing over gay bar owners and managers for a forthcoming book. On the afternoon that I visited Club Q in Colorado Springs, it was abuzz. They were preparing for the night’s event, the Winter Cotillion of the United Court of the Pikes Peak Empire, Southern Colorado’s chapter of the International Court System, one of the largest LGBTQ+ membership organizations in the world. In , the local court raised more than $54, for various local charities.

Gay bars are synonymous with charity events, and drag is as much a fundraising powerhouse as a performance art. I call gay bars not-quite-for-profits. Their owners tend to have time jobs, and they all assent that they could make more money from a straight business. The bigger value, to them, is the creation of lists don’t contact me when modern bars open, when they verb new fundraising records, or when their events send queer pleasure spilling into the streets.

Colorado lost its only lesbian bar. Then a new joint opened.

DENVER — Dom Garcia always dreamed of opening a tiki bar.

The idea became a reality when Garcia, a lesbian with Pacific Islander background, heard Blush & Blu — Colorado’s longest-standing and only lesbian bar — would be shutting its doors.

“I thought ‘we need something to occupy the hole, so why not, I’ll do it,” Garcia said.

Garcia turned to their community and opened a new lesbian bar, Pearl Divers, at E 13th Avenue on Dec. 1.

Before opening Pearl Divers, Garcia took to Facebook last October and asked members of the LGBTQ Denver Facebook group what they’d desire from a potential new lesbian bar.

Answers included ambient lighting, quality cocktails, a mocktail menu, wheelchair-friendly tables and events for transgender people and people of color.

Garcia expected a months-long process to open the bar but an opportunity arose the day after their post. Owners of Mora Pizza and Your Mom’s Dwelling — a restaurant and reside music venue located in the same building but separated by a wall — offered Garcia use of the loun

After its founding, it grew fast, and today it remains an important center of industry and innovation in the state. Today, Pueblo is a vibrant and thriving city with plenty of opportunities and much to glimpse and do for all who cal
