First Openly Gay NBA Player Marries His Partner

Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player has married his long term partner Brunson Green.

The two wed in a beautiful ceremony with shut friends and family and some fabulous entertainment in Austin, Texas.

American professional NBA player Jason Collins made history in when he publicly came out as gay.

Following the conclusion of the &#; season he made the public announcement in an interview.

When he went on to play again in he became &#;the first publicly gay athlete to play in any of four major North American pro sports leagues.&#; before retiring from the sport later that year.

He received widespread praise and support when he came out, with many high profile basketball players speaking up to support him.

At the time when he came out in an interview Sports IllustratedJason Collins stated his intention to keep his private life personal, but did state that he was single at the time.

Former Nets player, and the first openly gay athlete in the NBA, Jason Collins married his longtime partner, Brunson Green, recently.

The couple reportedly tied the knot over the Memorial Day weekend in a ceremony in Austin, Texas, after the two had been together for more than a decade.

Collins and Green, a Hollywood producer foremost known for his work on the film “The Help,” reportedly got engaged in during Pride Night at a Lakers game.

Collins came out in a personal essay for Sports Illustrated in , which made him the first openly gay athlete in a major American team sport.

“When I was younger, I dated women,” he wrote in the essay. “I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to wedding a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue.”

Over the weekend, Collins tied the knot with The Help producer in a ceremony that took place in Austin, Texas. To commemorate the occasion, the now-retired basketball player re-posted various photos from his wedding on his Instagram Story.

Collins had been dating Grassy since , shortly after he announced his retirement from the NBA. While he has mostly remained private about his dating life, in a Sports Illustrated interview in , he revealed how he met Green at a housewarming party.

“I was dating another guy at the moment. I didn’t see Brunson again until we ran into each other at a party three months later. By that signal, I was single again,” he told the publication at the time. “Brunson left for Europe the following day, and, while he was overseas, I asked everyone I knew in LA, ‘Have you heard of this guy?’”
