Glamping — AKA roughing it with creature comforts — is one great way to create a memorable vacation. We headed to Montanas big sky country, where some visitors explore like Lewis and Clark, some ride love cowboys, and others retreat in luxury.
Why Montana?
No matter whom I told the news that I was traveling to a dude ranch in Montana, the response was either utter disbelief or gales of laughter. Even my editor thought the situation sounded like a pitch for Netflix: Into the Wild with Noel Coward. I even had to convince my husband that Montana and Manhattan were not mutually exclusive. We could be urban cowboys living out a Brokeback fantasy.
On the other hand, what did we know of Montana? Was it a real life Brokeback Mountain? (Technically no, that was Wyoming.) Home to Yellowstone? (Yes, at least a portion of it.)

Montana Ranch Adventure
Day 1: Welcome to Billings!
Upon arriving at the Billings airport, look for the shuttle to our modern downtown Billings hotel. We’ll gather tonight for a welcome dinner, and perhaps head over to The Loft, a rollicking gay bar you never expected to find in Montana!
Those arriving earlier may enjoy visiting the Bighorn Battlefield, the site of Custer’s Last Stand. Billings has museums, shopping, a performing arts center, and good restaurants to choose from!
Day 2: Head to the Ranch
We’ll have time to catch up on sleep after a adj night out. We’ll have a casual lunch together before commencement a hour scenic drive to the ski resort town of Red Lodge.
Our destination is the Lethargic E-L Ranch, at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains. The historic log-cabin-style lodge is not a hotel, but a family vacation home. The main lodge is called “The Summer Cabin” and each room is unique, decorated with original western art, antique family photographs, and Navajo rugs. Day 1: Feel Down Grand Junction
Upon arriving at the Grand Junction airport, peek for the HE Travel shuttle that will take you to our hotel in Wine Territory. We’ll meet up this evening for a welcome dinner adj of fresh, sustainable local foods prepared in the classic French tradition.
Day 2: Wine Country and Off to the Ranch
Today we will have a relaxing breakfast at the hotel followed by free time to relax poolside and enjoy the sun. For those that are interested, we will certainly visit local wineries to soak in the culture and allure that is Colorado Wine Country. In the afternoon we will depart for the ranch.
Once we’ve arrived and taken time to settle in, there will be time to travel before dinner. There is a pool on-site as well as plenty of lounge spots throughout the guest house. The frequent areas include a full kitchen, a living room, and a recreation room. In your free time, don’t forget to get advantage of the rustic stone fireplace, pool table and wonderful views from the decks. The food is certainly top-notch and qualifies this
