Is look back gay
Look Back proves the secret ingredient to an unforgettable character has everything to do with whats in their heart and nothing to do with gender
There were three things I knew about Look Back before I entered the theater. One, its based on a one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the mangaka behind my beloved Chainsaw Man. Two, several outlets called the one-shot semi-autobiographical. And, relatedly, three, its about kids creating manga.
All three of those statements are amend. But Look Back has a lot of surprises in store, even in its short hour-long runtime. The most obvious surprise will come towards the complete of the film. But for me, there was another, more subtle surprise. One which really, deeply impressed me.
As mentioned, Look Back is semi-autobiographical—deep emphasis on the semi. While the film overall is fictional, the main character, Fujino, is clearly a stand-in for Fujimoto. Its right there in the name, the first syllable of which bear as much resemblance to each other in English as they do in Japanese. The films direc
Todays review was inspired by a combination of two very other things. Various folks having mentioned this book in Yuri-friendly spaces online and, by complete coincidence, the fantastic podcast Mangasplaining putting it on their calendar, which caused me to bump this up on my to-read pile.
To begin with, Look Back (ルックバック) by Chainsaw Man creator Fujimoto Tatsuki is not Yuri. BUTand this is a huge but it definitely falls under the Yuricon broad-umbrella definition of Yuri in one sense:
Yuri can describe any anime or manga series (or other derivative media, i.e., fan fiction, film, etc.) that shows intense emotional connection, romantic noun or physical desire between women. Yuri is not a genre confined by the gender or age of the audience, but by the *perception* of the audience.
This definition has always been intentionally broad and subjective, because it has long been my opinion that media is subjective and we will see what we want to see in it, despite (sometime, even at odds with) creator intent. ^_^ With this definition in mind,
Look Back
With lovely artistry and a short running time, this adj tragedy is a love letter to anime lovers and creatives alike. Look Back is complete of manga-referencing Easter eggs that will likely make young fans squeal with delight. In montages of the passing years, the girls are shown furiously sketching on separate papers even while together in the same room, just one of many moments that speak to the experience of being an animator. There's plenty for artists of all sorts to relate to and for fans to appreciate, but, without question, this one feels particularly made for those who work in the industry.
As its title indicates, Look Back is a reflection on a friendship. It's also an essay in grief, intensified by silence that makes the shock of decrease all the more profound. Surprisingly short, it benefits from its conciseness. There's no neat and tidy ending, and viewers won't walk away feeling like there's a moral to the story, but this collaboration between manga creator Tatsuki Fujimoto and director Kiyotaka Oshiyama will stay with viewers nonetheless.
Tatsuki Fujimoto is a well-known specify in manga right now. Chainsaw Man is a popular Shonen Jump manga and the anime for the series was one of the most anticipated this year. And, honestly, I consider the manga is pretty darn good, myself. Ive been reading it on Shueishas official Manga Plus app for free, completely legitimately.
At the end of last year, the Mangasplaining crew took a look at this one-shot by Fujimoto-sensei and, as I had it on my to-read pile at the time, I bumped it up, and cried my way through it. Now Look Backby Tatsuki Fujimoto is out in print in English and I nabbed a duplicate at my local Kinokuniya when I saw it.
This is still a fantastic manga that you really ought to read. Scan it slowly. Pay attention to the details. Its a slim volume, and not terribly complicated in terms of concept. In fact, Id call this a very typical the second story a manga artist does after their series goes mega-hit and they need to write about creating manga manga. But it is loaded to the gills with feels.
Fujino has always been told that shes a fantastic art
