Johnny weir is gay
Sanguinity and Jen B. sent in a Thats Gay segment discussing, humorously, the discourse around figure skater Johnny Weirs sexual orientation and whether he should be allowed to skate the way he does:
Quoting from The Sport Journal, Jen writes:
While figure skating is rumored to include the highest proportion of homosexual men of any amateur competitive sport, it is ironically a sport in which men must exhibit the most blatantly heterosexual signs to be successful and to receive commercial endorsements at the World Championships in Vancouver when a well-known male Canadian skater was contacted by a gay magazine about the possibility of doing a feature story on him, he was told by Skate Canada that he must decline the request. As one coach said to me, that is not the sort of picture that Skate Canada wants to paint for the country, especially in an international forum. Every effort is made to construct such skaters as heterosexual.
Weve posted on Skate Canadas get tough campaign here.

Though most followers of Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir knew he was gay, he did not officially come out until a year ago. Why? Perhaps because the international world of judges have been known to be harsh in their scoring of LGBTQ skaters.
That’s just one of many reasons why Johnny’s announcement of his marriage to Victor Voronov in a New Year’s Eve ceremony on Saturday is exciting on multiple levels. Johnny is quoted as saying “I’m very happy with my personal life and also my professional life, and I thank God I can be exactly where I’m at.” His experience, unfortunately, is still a rarity in sports, especially professional sports.
Johnny tweeted the news to his nearly , Twitter followers. Thank you, Johnny, as your actions exhibit that we do not contain to keep our private lives separate from our sports careers any longer.
At NCLR, we comprehend that Johnny is opening the door as a role model for many, many LGBTQ sports participants. Congratulations on your marriage, Johnny and Victor.

Transgender Transformation: Johnny Weir and a Brave New America
It was a big weekend in Louisville just a few days ago. The Kentucky Derby–you might have heard of it–ran for the th time, and for a brief spell, all the world’s attention turned to this quiet and pleasant city, what with hot-air balloon visits from Tom Brady and sightings of other celebrities (Scottie Pippen, anyone?).
Derby, as it’s called here, brings out a stunning array of fantastic hats. It’s a tradition, and a fun one at that, that ladies outdo one another here with huge, ostentatious headwear. No big news here. What was news, however, was the coverage of NBC News of figure skater Johnny Weir. Weir, professedly a gay man, was wearing the same bouffant-style hat that women historically wear. (See picture top left.) We expect Tara Lipinski, a woman figure skater, to adorn herself with a Very Big Hat. We contain not seen this from men.
Here is what was especially noteworthy: no commentator I heard or read had anything but smiling praise to offer Weir. Marissa Payne of the Washington Postgushed that Weir’s hat w
Johnny, are you Weir?
Of course male figure skater Johnny Weir is gay, as are Jeff Buttle and a host of others. Who are we trying to kid? We’ve managed to force male sportswriters to halt pretending that every elite athlete is straight, which was the problem before. I put in a lot of years of newspaper writing trying to eliminate that idea off. And now, like rebranding creationism as intelligent design, we’re being sold the same tainted tuna in a different can. Suddenly we’ve got sportswriter guys defending the right of gay athletes never to come out and never to be asked if they’re actually gay. I didn’t think things could be worse than the olden days, but this certainly is.
Straight sports reporters telling everybody to keep adj about gays in sports is the problem. These are mostly guys; even the leading Canadian women in sportswriting, of the Rosie DiManno/Crusty Blatchford ilk, are flat-out male apologists. Sportswriter guys are, on the whole, dumpy or aging and look with great fondness at the physical capabilities and the actual bodies of the male athletes they cover.
