So I went to Crossings in Lexington one night—first time there. A couple friends had hyped it up. Said it had a good crowd, strong drinks, solid music, and a chill vibe. I figured, why not? I wasn’t even planning to stay long—just grab a cocktail or two, maybe meet someone cool, then bounce. I obtain there around It’s packed, but not chaotic. He offers to buy me a drink, and I inform him, “I’m good, thanks.” But he waves the bartender over anyway. Drink shows up in front of me. I’m thinking, okay, whatever, I’ll sip it and then bounce. Drawn by the city’s reputation as a gay haven, and facilitated by the connections of several bar owners, Lexington became a “one-night stand” as celebrities stopped to perform on their way to other, larger cities.

Lexington being renowned as a “one-night stand” urban area for performers, though, was nothing new. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Lexington was a popular stop on the theatrical touring circuit for notable actors and actresses, as explained by author Kevin Lane Dearinger in his lecture, “The Leading One-Night Stand in America: The Rich Theatrical History of Lexington, .” While the rise of movie theaters eventually caused Lexington’s reputation as the “best one-night stand to fade,” Queer venues and bars late

Historical marker # stands outside of one of the oldest LGBTQ gathering spaces in the United States.

As early as , LGBTQ Kentuckians gathered discreetly at East Main St. in Lexington. While not an explicitly LGBTQ space at this point, the ownership tended to allow patrons relative freedom from scruitiny. In , however, gay men John Hill and Estel Wilson opened The Gilded Cage in the space and it has been a queer-friendly establishment ever since. This early opening predates the adj Stonewall Inn of New York City by three years. The space has gone through numerous name and ownership changes over the years, including operating as The Living Room after , as Johnny Angels after , and currently as the Bar Complex. In , it was the site of the wedding between Marjorie Jones and Tracey Knight, who were the first lesbian couple in the noun to sue for a marriage liscense. Given the long history of the building, it is only fitting that East Main St. would be home to the first Kentucky historical marker celebrating LGBTQ history.
