They should have capitalised on this by opening a gay retreat in the Caribbean under another brand, and referred clients there- that way everyone is happy.

In theory, that sounds like a workable alternative, but (IMO) in practice, it would just be another "separate and unequal" alternative to the main event - the hetero resorts, which would be underwritten, in part, by Sandals gay customers.
