One of his friends who joined the celebration is his &#;Schitt&#;s Creek&#; co-star and on-screen beau Noah Reid. The two actors make for one of the most loved gay couples (David and Patrick) on TV, and the sitcom&#;s viewers were able to witness their amazing love story, which eventually led to their beautiful wedding.

At last night's Emmys, Canadian comedy Schitt's Creek scooped a record nine awards.

But for many of its fans, it's not the awards which create the show stand out as special.

"The relationship between Patrick and David is so important for the LGBTQ community," fan Eliza Gilbert tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

The Netflix show follows the wealthy Rose family, who are forced to move to a motel in a small town after losing their fortune.

But it's the romantic relationship between David (who identifies as pansexual) and Patrick (who is gay) which stands out for lots of fans.

"It's completely normalised," says Eliza, "it's a natural portrayal of that kind of relationship, entire of warmth and love," the year-old says.

David and Patrick might be ready to walk down the aisle but, according to Schitt&#;s Creek creator/actor/executive product Dan Levy, the couple wasn&#;t always endgame.

Speaking with EW, Levy admitted that Noah Reid&#;s casting was pretty rushed since they just wanted to give David a potential relationship ASAP. He explained,

“We cast him halfway through the season. David needed a relationship because he&#;s so fragile when it comes to adore. We thought, if it works, great.&#;

He continued,

“Noah could have reach into the show and we could&#;ve gotten along, but there wouldn&#;t have been the equal spark. Then we would possess probably inevitably either written him out or had it perish off at some point.&#;

It was pretty obvious from the moment the first two met that there was something special, adequately, at least to viewers. Their first kiss is one of the most memorable parts of their relationship and probably one of the most vulnerable moments for Patrick.
